The site processes approximately 50,000m³ annually
All the timber processed by the mill is sourced locally as possible, always within Wales.
Using local hauliers enables us to make the operations efficient and cost effective, keeping our carbon footprint as small as possible.
Working Together
We work closely with various bodies e.g. WPA, Confor and our chemical provider, to ensure that we are fully compliant with current legislation and training.
James Davies Ltd. is FSC and WPA Benchmark.
James Davies won the Wood Protection Association Treatment Quality Award in 2023, an award given to companies that go above and beyond in their efforts and demonstrate exceptional quality processes.
Investment
We have invested in excess of £6 million over recent years in the plant, machinery and technology including:
- Telecant
- Giving fully automated scanning of logs, increasing yield and efficiency. Total increase of 45% throughput.
- Moulder / Planer
- Installed in 2011 to produce value added Larch products, i.e. decking, D Rails and components for potato boxes.
- Improving the finish to existing products, i.e. capping rails
- Improved Storage Area
- The new storage has enabled the site to hold larger stocks of timber, which now amounts to approximately 15,000m³.
- Erection of a covered area for natural drying of finished products prior to treatment.
- New parking area 20% bigger than existing.
- Multi Head Stenner
- Installed to increase the quality, efficiency and throughput of products, i.e. feather edge boards.
- It has enabled productivity to increase 100% against the use of a single head resaw.
- Kiln Drying / Heat Treatment
- Installed to dry fencing when means are unavailable, and to maintain and guarantee the moisture levels prior to treatment.
- The facility enables us to offer heat treated products.
- Incisor
- This new innovation was installed to create and market Larch products. i.e. Premium Agri posts. It enables the company to consistently meet Class 4 British Standards while significantly improving treatment penetration, ensuring deeper protection and enhanced durability. As a result, treated products can be guaranteed a service life of 15+ years, offering customers a reliable, high-performance timber solution suited to demanding environments.
- New Resaw and Automatic Sorting and Stacking System.
- At a cost of 1.5 million, this will inrease the throughput by 25% and 4% on recovery using the most up-to-date technology in the saw line.
- New Firewood Processing Plant
Moving Forward
We have invested in creating and marketing a new range of products, and has worked in close cooperation with NRW to ensure we have been able to utilise volumes available from both roadside and standing sales.
James Davies are extremely confident that the mutually valuable Long Term Contract for the supply of spruce will be renegotiated to the benefit of both parties and to secure long term local employment and sustained future growth.
